Baby Names - Can you ever win?
When you see someone who is pregnant there are a few standard questions that everyone asks. When are you due? Boy or girl? Do you have a name picked out? I think everyone has talked to the woman who is about to pop, but when asked about her baby’s name she says, “Oh, we aren’t sure yet. We have to see him first.” This is usually a complete lie done to protect her and her unborn child from the scrutiny of others.
With my cousin’s first baby girl she told everyone that her name would be Ryan. Some of the reactions she got included her husband’s uncle telling her that that’s why people have their own kids - so they can name them whatever they want and my grandma telling her that she likes the name Rachel, so she will be calling her that instead. For her second baby girl she told everyone that she had a few things in mind, but hadn’t decided yet. I think she just learned from the first go around. Once the birth certificate is filled out, people can’t convince you to go in another direction.
My husband and I had our son’s name picked out years before he was even conceived. Boy’s name are difficult considering how many of them have been turned into girl’s names - Taylor, Hayden, Kyle and the list continues. Drake is different without being unrecognizable and it means dragon, which my husband loved. The reactions we got and still get (he is now 3 months old) are the people who think it’s cool and different, the vacant smile that says “what a silly name” and my favorite - “Like the pirate?”
From this I have learned that you cannot please the world with your baby’s name. There is always going to be someone who knew an Emily who was mean and never shared in kindergarten. All you can do is please yourself and hope your kid grows up to like their own name.
